About Joanna Stephens, MD
Medical School: University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
Residency: University of Pennsylvania Family Medicine Residency Program
Fellowship: University of Rochester Fellowship in Maternal Child Health
Joanna studied International Relations with a focus on international economic development at the College of William and Mary. Her interest in the intersection between economic development, health policy, and human rights drew her to focus on global health. After college, she received a Rotary scholarship to study French in Morocco and then spent a year in the Côte d’Ivoire on a Fulbright Fellowship. Her research centered on breastfeeding among HIV positive women in Abidjan. It was there that she developed her interest in maternal child health and its role in the health of communities.
She went on to study medicine at the University of Pennsylvania on a 21st Century Scholarship. She completed family medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania and then a fellowship in Maternal Child Health and Surgical Obstetrics at the University of Rochester. Joanna speaks French and Spanish, and has also studied and volunteered in South Africa, Botswana, Argentina, and Guatemala. Her particular clinical interests include refugee and immigration health, equity in access to contraception, and maternal child health.
She is excited to work at Sea Mar to provide full spectrum primary care to families along with full spectrum obstetric care, including C-sections. She is also excited by the opportunity to work with residents – the next generation of leaders in community health!
