About Michael Kopec, MD

Core Faculty

Sea Mar Marysville

Medical School: Wayne State University School of Medicine

Residency: University of Michigan Family Medicine Residency

Fellowship: Swedish Family Medicine Advanced Obstetrical Fellowship

Dr. Kopec began working at Sea Mar in September 2013. He attended medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit and stayed in Michigan to complete his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Michigan in 2012.  He moved to Seattle in 2012 to complete an advanced obstetrical fellowship at Swedish Family Medicine.

As a Family Medicine Practitioner, he enjoys forming long-term, trusting relationships with his patients. He continues to be impressed with how important the therapeutic relationship is in relation to ongoing health. Including entire families in his patient panels has been a very positive aspect of his practice. He also enjoys the variety of practice that Family Medicine allows, and he has been able to cater his practice to his interests and expertise. He enjoys working in a Community Health Center, where he is providing quality care to the poor and underserved. He has had a chance to improve his Spanish and learn about the Latino culture while working at Sea Mar since a large portion of his patients are Latinos.

Dr. Kopec advises future residents to make sure their chosen program will help them accomplish their career goals. The program should provide them with a sufficient number, breadth, and quality of experiences that will make them the family physician they aspire to be. When he was applying his favorite programs were ones where he felt he fit in well with the other residents and the culture of the residency.  That “fit” is important for personal and professional growth and will make the time spent in residency enjoyable.  As a teacher he enjoys witnessing the growth of learners.  He continues to work on identifying areas of deficits in learners’ knowledge in order to provide high-yield, effective teaching.  He also enjoys making learning a mutual process where evidence-based medicine is emphasized.

Coming from the Michigan, Dr. Kopec appreciates how this area continues to have four seasons but isn’t too cold or snowy in the winter. The summers are perfect. The proximity to beautiful parks, mountain views, lakes, and the Puget Sound has renewed his interest in outdoor activities, especially hiking. Seattle is also nearby so it is easy to participate in urban activities like theater, concerts, etc.

Dr. Kopec enjoys binge watching TV shows on Netflix and being outdoors, hiking at local parks or exploring nearby towns. He has become more interested in home improvement projects (whether out of necessity or actual interest he is unsure) and has had fun using power tools and learning new aspects of home remodeling. He enjoys mainly rock and alternative music and still frequently listens to many of the bands that put the Seattle area on the map!
