East coast transplant Cor Van Niel came out to the Seattle area for residency training at the UW/Seattle Children’s Hospital’s Pediatrics Residency Program and has been here ever since. Originally from upstate New York, Dr. Van Niel attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. He currently practices at three Sea Mar clinics: Seattle, Marysville, and Tacoma as well as being a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington and the site director for the Sea Mar Seattle satellite training site for the UW/Seattle Children’s Pediatrics Residency program! In his spare time he enjoys running, hiking, ultimate Frisbee, playing the violin, and spending time with his family.

Dr. Van Niel believes that Sea Mar stands apart from the competition thanks to its dedication to optimizing health for children, families, and its patient population.  Sea Mar invests in the services necessary to help physicians achieve these goals. His favorite thing about practicing in a Family Medicine clinic is working with children and their families to help children realize their fullest potential!

Teaching comes naturally to Dr. Van Niel and he enjoys helping residents discover the tools they need to develop their own unique practice style (the art of medicine) as well as their own rational approach to patient illness and wellness (the science of medicine).  He also feels that when he teaches a topic to insightful, enthusiastic residents, he truly understands that topic. Dr. Van Niel has this advice for new residents: Residency is not a means to an end.  You have to enjoy the ride!  And really becoming involved in a community and its overall health, as well as the lives of you individual patients and their families, will be a sustaining force for you during your residency years and beyond.
